Individual-based seasonal habitat selection in a forest-dwelling population of reintroduced bison Bison bison

چکیده
Mapping habitat selection by threatened species provides critical information for conservation planning. For reintroduced populations, understanding is also necessary to predict dispersal and inform of new reintroduction sites. Efforts restore bison Bison the boreal forest hinge on persistence geographically isolated populations that occupy diverse landscapes, many selected habitats are unknown. We used location data from GPS-collared develop seasonal resource function (RSF) models predictive maps ‘Nahanni’ population. accounted variation in individual behaviour calculating averaged population-level coefficients RSFs, we compared these results a pooled RSF all bison. Individual RSFs revealed was not always captured RSF, although there were some consistencies. strongly forage-rich graminoid-dominated wetlands (fens) during winter, but less so summer when potential tradeoffs with poor footing biting flies. In summer, alternative sources forage such as herbaceous, shrubby fluvial (i.e. riverine islands gravel bars). The observed association may be an adaptation low availability this landscape. roads anthropogenic clearings associated development, demonstrating human–wildlife conflict. Our highlight areas interest, should considered land use planning environmental assessments. demonstrate value foraging forest-dwelling bison, particularly winter. Identifying patches, connectivity between them, important considering sites reintroductions or expansion existing populations. More broadly, our approach identify high where resources do allow extensive sample sizes animals.

Assessing Potential Habitat and Carrying Capacity for Reintroduction of Plains Bison (Bison bison bison) in Banff National Park.
Interest in bison (Bison bison, B. bonasus) conservation and restoration continues to grow globally. In Canada, plains bison (B. b. bison) are threatened, occupying less than 0.5% of their former range. The largest threat to their recovery is the lack of habitat in which they are considered compatible with current land uses. Fences and direct management make range expansion by most bison imposs...

متن کاملSeasonal Shifts in Diet and Gut Microbiota of the American Bison (Bison bison).
North American bison (Bison bison) are becoming increasingly important to both grassland management and commercial ranching. However, a lack of quantitative data on their diet constrains conservation efforts and the ability to predict bison effects on grasslands. In particular, we know little about the seasonality of the bison diet, the degree to which bison supplement their diet with eudicots,...
متن کاملConservation genetics and North American bison (Bison bison).
The many millions of North American bison in the mid-19th century were reduced to near extinction by the middle 1880s. Plains bison, the subspecies found in the United States, were saved from extinction primarily by 5 private ranchers and the survival of a small herd in what is now Yellowstone National Park. This bottleneck resulted in the present-day plains bison population being descended fro...
متن کاملHepatic lipidosis in pregnant captive American bison (Bison bison).
Hepatic lipidosis, a hallmark lesion of lipid mobilization disorders in ruminants, was noted in four 3-year-old, pregnant bison (Bison bison) after periods of anorexia that progressed to recumbency and death. The affected bison were part of a herd at the National Animal Disease Center (NADC) that was used for brucellosis vaccine research. Microscopically, the liver contained swollen hepatocytes...
